Jorge Lewinski (1921 - 2008)
The Lewinski photo archive was purchased in 2002 by the Earl of Burlington, the Duke of Devonshire's son and a professional photographer. It contains photographs of over 300 artists, from Britain and abroad, working and exhibiting in Britain between 1962 and 1995. The photo archive is both an imaginative interpretation of these artists with their work and an important record of British art at this time.
Jorge Lewinski came to Britain from his native Poland in 1942 to train with the Royal Air Force. After the war he elected to stay in Britain, and became a professional photographer in 1966, having earlier practiced photography as an amateur. He started photographing artists in the early 1960s, often in their studios, and became known as the foremost photographer of artists in Britain.
Lewinski was Senior Lecturer at the London College of Printing from 1968 to 1982, and wrote a number of books on photography. A major retrospective of his work drawn from the photo archive was shown at Sotheby's London in January 2004. A book on Lewinski's photographs of artists was published by the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005.
