Why do we need a design museum?
Deyan Sudjic is Director of the Design Museum in London. Founded in 1989, the Design Museum is the UK’s cultural champion of design and wins international acclaim for exhibitions of modern design history and contemporary design. Now the Design Museum is itself being re-designed.
On 24 November 2016, the new Design Museum is set to open on the site of the former Commonwealth Institute, Kensington. It will be the world’s leading museum devoted to contemporary design and architecture; an international showcase for the many design skills at which Britain excels and a creative centre promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of design talent.
Join Deyan Sudjic in conversation with Julia Peyton-Jones, Director of The Serpentine Galleries: 1991 - 2016, as he takes us on a tour of the new museum, explaining why we need it, previewing its amazing new galleries and spaces and pointing out some of his own favourite objects in the museum’s collection.
With an academic background in architecture and design, Deyan has also published several books on the subject, including The Language of Things (2008) and the hugely popular B is for Bauhaus: An A-Z of the Modern World (2014).
