Now standing on the South Lawn at Chatsworth as the centrepiece of Sotheby’s latest edition of Beyond Limits, LILAS is the stunning white pavilion designed by Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher for the Serpentine Galleries in 2007.
Taking inspiration (and its name) from complex natural geometries such as flower petals, the structure allows the free movement of light, air and sound throughout its sweeping form.
Dame Zaha Hadid, one of the country’s best known– and most pioneering – architects set up Zaha Hadid Architects in 1980. For nearly 20 years, until her untimely death in March this year, Patrik Schumacher worked closely with her as co-author of their most important projects, including the design of LILAS. Patrik discusses the design and building of this extraordinary temporary installation and his historic collaboration with Zaha in a stimulating conversation with renowned arts journalist Farah Nayeri.
Patrik Schumacher is the principal of ZHA and lectures and writes on architecture.
Farah Nayeri is visual arts and architecture journalist for The International New York Times and The New York Times.
