Join us in 2016 for a celebration of the Grand Tour and continental travel, as seen through the eyes and collection of the Devonshire family.
The Grand Tour was a voyage through Europe that formed an essential part of a young aristocratic gentleman’s education. Popular from the late 17th century to the early 19th century, the aim of the journey was to expose the traveller to ancient culture, fine art and politics.
This exhibition, arranged around the house in a series of displays, will explore how the Grand Tour influenced Chatsworth as we know it today. Discover rarely seen objects from the Devonshire Collection, and hear some of the amazing stories from the Archive about these long, dangerous and often very costly journeys.
A Grand Tour of the Devonshire Collection is part of Season 2 of The Grand Tour, a partnership between Nottingham Contemporary, Derby Museums, The Harley Gallery and Chatsworth, together with Experience Nottinghamshire and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire. You can discover more about the partnership and the exhibitions taking place in 2016 on The Grand Tour website.
