Never a Bore: Deborah Devonshire and her set by Cecil Beaton

19 March 2016 - 3 January 2017

Included with admission to the house

Join us in 2016 to explore rarely seen photographs of the late Dowager Duchess, Deborah Devonshire and her dazzling social circle, taken by her friend and renowned photographer Cecil Beaton.

From politicians and artists to Hollywood legends, Cecil Beaton captured the 20th century’s most interesting personalities with his camera.  An early guest at Chatsworth in 1959 when the family moved in, Beaton was a friend of Deborah Devonshire as were many of his subjects.

Portraits of her circle from The Cecil Beaton Studio Archive, on loan from Sotheby’s, come together with rarely seen material from the Devonshire Collection and Archive and insightful and witty commentary from Deborah Devonshire and Cecil Beaton recreating the essence of their world.

The exhibition takes inspiration from one of Beaton's most famous remarks, "Perhaps the world's second-worst crime is boredom; the first is being a bore."
