3. Bess of Hardwick 1608 – 2008, approx 1 hour
This is the story of one of Derbyshire’s greatest historical figures, who died 400 years ago. In her time, Bess of Hardwick was the richest woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I. She founded a dynasty and built some of the grandest and most spectacular houses the country had ever seen.
4. The celebrated Duchess Georgiana, approx 1 hour
Born into the Spencer family, Georgiana married the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Famously charming, she bewitched and scandalised Georgian society, while at
the same time being a compulsive gambler, a collector of minerals and playing a significant role in the politics of her day. Her portrait by Gainsborough stills
captivates visitors to Chatsworth, and in 2008, Keira Knightley will star in a film of her life. This is her story.
