Sir William Cavendish (Bess and Sir William's second son) was created Baron Cavendish.

1618
Baron Cavendish created 1st Earl of Devonshire. Married Anne Keighley daughter of Henry Keighley.

William Cavendish became 2nd Earl of Devonshire. Married Hon. Christian Bruce, daughter of 1st Lord Kinloss.

William Cavendish became 3rd Earl of Devonshire. Married Lady Elizabeth Cecil, daughter of 2nd Earl of Salisbury.
1609
The first Earl commissioned a survey of the Derbyshire and other family estates, more than 97,000 acres, incorporating stone and marble quarries, lead and copper mines as well as woods and farms.


1684
William Cavendish became 4th Earl of Devonshire.

1694
Created 1st Duke of Devonshire. Married Lady Mary Butler, daughter of 1st Duke of Ormonde.
1687
Over 10 years from this date the 1st Duke replaced the original house wing by wing and created a series of formal gardens which included the Cascade, canal and willow tree fountain.
