William Cavendish became 2nd Duke of Devonshire. Married Hon. Rachel Russell, daughter of Lord William Russell. |

The second Duke founded the Devonshire collection of paintings, drawings, coins and Greek and Roman gems.

William Cavendish became 3rd Duke of Devonshire. Married Katharine Hoskins, daughter of John Hoskins. |
The 3rd Duke commissioned William Kent to rebuild and furnish Devonshire House, Piccadilly, the family's house in London.

William Cavendish became 4th Duke of Devonshire. Married Lady Charlotte Boyle, daughter of 4th Earl of Cork and 3rd Earl of Burlington. |
1758 - 64
The 4th Duke employed 'Capability' Brown to landscape the garden and park and James Paine to build a stable block and the bridge. ![]() Through his marriage he acquired Lismore Castle, Bolton Abbey, Chiswick House and their contents, owned by Lord Burlington, his father-in-law.

William Cavendish became 5th Duke of Devonshire. Married Lady Georgiana Spencer, daughter of 1st Earl Spencer. Later married Lady Elizabeth Foster, daughter of 4th Earl of Bristol. |

The 5th Duke employed John Carr of York to build the Crescent at Buxton.
