Learning in the house

Learning in the house | Pre-school and foundation level | Key stages 1 & 2 | Key stage 3 | Key stage 4 | Higher education

The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is special not only as one of the country's grandest treasure houses, but also as a family home that has evolved over 450 years. Its collection spans 4000 years of culture and craftsmanship from around the world, and it continues to grow and change today.

The house has countless stories to tell. The majestic State Rooms bring to life the grandeur of Stuart court life, Queen Victoria had her first formal dinner here, and a 300 schoolchildren moved in during WWII.

A range of guided tours have been developed to help you uncover these stories, in a way that also supports Curriculum teaching in a broad range of subjects. Tours are available in English, French, Dutch and Italian.

A time for admission to the house will be allocated to all education groups. Please note that in July, school tours in the house must begin before 11am or after 1pm to ensure groups can see the house without too much overcrowding. In November and December tours must begin at or before 10am.
