Gormley's Angel Goes Beyond Limits
A cast iron, life-size maquette (images available on request) of Antony Gormley's world-renowned 'Angel of the North' has been announced as one of the star attractions of Beyond Limits the monumental sculpture exhibition held at Chatsworth in Derbyshire's Peak District.
Running from Monday, 14 September until Sunday, 1 November, Beyond Limits is Sotheby's leading outdoor selling exhibition. Gormley's 'Angel' will be joined in Chatsworth's 105-acre garden, designed by Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton, by up to 20 modern and contemporary works from leading international sculptors.
As in the past three years, the show is expected to draw thousands of art-lovers, collectors and casual visitors, both young and old. All exhibits will be on display from 11am-6pm every day at no extra charge beyond normal garden admission (standard adult garden ticket is £7.50 - discounted ticketing options are available).
Last year's event included 'Planet', a 30ft, six-ton sculpture by Marc Quinn of a baby apparently 'floating' above the lawn in front of the house, as well as works by Salvador Dali, Lynn Chadwick, Fernando Botero and many more.
Beyond Limits is now firmly established as one of the leading events in the artistic calendar as it enters its fourth year at Chatsworth. In the past 15 years, the Chatsworth House Trust and the Devonshire family have continued the purchase and commissioning of contemporary sculpture for display in the garden and park, including work by Dame Elisabeth Frink, Angela Conner, Barry Flanagan, David Nash and Allen Jones.
Notes to editors:
1. A maquette (French word for scale model) is a preliminary model or rough draft of a finished architectural work or a sculpture. It is used to visualise and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full scale product. It is the analogue of the painter's cartoon, modello, oil sketch or drawn sketch. For commissioned sculptures, especially monumental public sculptures, a maquette may be used to show the client how the finished work will fit in the proposed site. Like oil sketches, these works in progress can be at least as much sought after as completed works by highly regarded artists, showing the process of developing an idea.
2. Several maquettes were produced during the development stage for the 'Angel of the North'. One, a life-size model from which the sculpture was created, was sold at Sotheby's for just over £2m in July 2008. The example at Chatsworth this autumn is another cast from that limited edition.
3. Beyond Limits will once again showcase a broad range of work by many of today's leading international sculptors, as well as major pieces by home-grown UK talents: a full list will be announced closer to the time and a full catalogue made available.
4. Sculpture Tour in the garden, 10 October - This Autumn, Chatsworth will host the 4th Beyond Limits exhibition of modern and contemporary sculptures, in the garden. This tour will range across a selection of highlights from the sculptures on view, with reference back to some of the historic pieces that have been a feature of the Chatsworth landscape for centuries. £28 per person, for one option, or £45 per person for both, with a complimentary tea or coffee voucher and to include free entry to the house and/or garden during the day.
