Three Renaissance Masterworks from the Devonshire Collection to be offered at Sotheby's

Date: 4th September 2012

The Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement and the family have decided to sell three important items from the Devonshire Collection: a drawing by Raphael, the Head of a Young Apostle, and two 15th century manuscripts in French, the "Mystere de la Vengeance" and "Deeds of Sir Gillion de Trazegnies in the Holy Land".  Although these are all wonderful pieces, the integrity of the Devonshire Collection will not be affected. The drawing is one of c.3000 in the Collection and Raphael will remain well represented by 14 other major drawings. The 2 manuscripts were acquired by the 6th Duke in the Roxburghe Sale in 1812 as "one-off" exceptional items and are not central to the extensive and historic Devonshire manuscript portfolio. Sotheby's has been appointed to handle the sale, which will be by public auction in London on December 5th.   For further information please see the announcement of the sale on the Sotheby's website.  http://investor.shareholder.com/bid/releases.cfm
