A novel by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire with an introduction by Amanda Foreman.

First published in 1779 'The Sylph' was an immediate success for its young author and quickly went through several editions. It tells the tale of a young bride abandoned by her hedonistic husband to the mercy of his rakish friends who try to contrive her seduction and downfall. She is saved partly through her inherent goodness but mostly by the support of a secret friend who adopts the eponymous guise of the title to provide practical and emotional support.

'The Sylph' depicts a society where seduction, adultery and heavy gaming are the norm and was widely seen as an accurate portrayal of Georgiana's circle. Shaken by the outrage and upset caused, Georgiana never wrote another novel. She died in 1806 at the age of forty-nine.

A paperback book containing 223 pages. 13cm x 20cm.
