Accessibility information

Car parking
The front of the car park, close to the house entrance, is a designated car park for visitors with disabilities. Car parking is free for all Blue Badge holders.

Assistance dogs
All assistance dogs are welcome indoors and out.

Wheelchairs & electric scooters
We have three electric scooters which can be borrowed to use in the garden, and eight manual wheelchairs for use both in the garden and the north wing of the House. Read more

House
There are 160 steps in the oldest part of the House and access to this area for those unable to climb stairs is currently under review. A video of the entire visitor route is shown all day in the information kiosk.

The north wing of the house, which includes the Library, Great Dining Room, Sculpture Gallery and orangery shop, is accessible for visitors using manual wheelchairs. Access to the north wing is via a ramp leading from the garden into the orangery shop.
For your enjoyment and safety, we recommend that where possible people with disabilities visit this area at 11.00 am.

Garden
The garden is accessible for visitors who use manual wheelchairs and electric scooters. Although there are some steep slopes, the plan of the Garden which you can print from this website, shows details of routes of varying length and ease so it should be possible to find a route to most of the features that interest you. There are large print, text only copies of the garden guidebook available for loan at both entrances to the garden. Please ask on arrival.

The Rt. Hon. David Blunkett M.P. officially opened the new sensory garden at Chatsworth on Saturday 7 August 2004.

If you have any queries whilst you are in the garden, staff at the pay boxes or any member of the garden staff will be pleased to help you.

Farmyard and adventure playground
The entrance is at the top of the main car park. A lift and ramp give access to all levels and facilities, including animal housing, picnic room, café, shop and playground. Please be aware that the playground is a woodland site with uneven terrain and a soft bark surface. The paddocks / picnic area is accessible via a gently sloping footpath.

Access trailer
The access trailer is a fully wheelchair-accessible 28 seat passenger-carrying trailer which offers rides to the woods and lakes behind the house on most days. There is a small additional charge. We recommend that you pre-book to ensure availability by contacting the farmyard on 01246 583139.

Shops and restaurant
The shops, carriage house restaurant and Jean-Pierre’s bar are all fully accessible, although space is limited in the garden shop.

Lavatories
There are adapted unisex lavatories near the house entrance, in the restaurant and at the farmyard.

Farm Shop and stud farm pantry
The Farm Shop and stud farm pantry are situated 1½ miles away from the house; both areas are accessible for visitors in manual wheelchairs.

Wheelchair access to footpaths through the park
The Kissing Gate was installed in 1999 at the Baslow end of the park, replacing the original gate. Inspired by Mrs Jill Cannon, the gate was made and donated by Mathers Engineering of Tibshelf. The gate allows easy wheelchair access to the park without leaving an opening through which grazing stock might escape.
