Farmyard & adventure playground

Caring for animals and the enviroment

Pupils look at how we care for animals, the environment and each other. With a member of the Farmyard team they can work with the farm animals, explore the surrounding environment, or do a combination of both. Teachers can choose either a Farmyard tour or indoor session in the Oak Barn. 

New life and growth

Pupils handle animals and learn about the life processes of animals and/or plants by comparing, contrasting and classifying. With a member of the Farmyard team they will look at the needs for health, nutrition and growth of different species, how they are are adapted to their lifestyles, and how they change as they grow. This option is ideal for the spring term, when bottle-feeding a lamb or goat kid is included. Teachers can choose either a Farmyard tour or indoor session in the Oak Barn.

Products and materials

Pupils will make the link between the farm and the food we eat by learning about the variety of products we get from farm animals, such as cows, sheep, pigs, goats and chickens. With a member of the Farmyard team they will look at products such as eggs, meat and milk and the processes they undergo before they reach our tables, as well as other natural resources such as leather and wool.

Tractor and trailer ride

This exciting trailer ride around Chatsworth park or Stand Wood is a great way to explore the landscape's hidden features. A member of the Farmyard team will point out wildlife and share stories about daily life on the estate.

Stand Wood sensory walk

Borrow an activity pack full of exciting resources to investigate this historic woodland habitat. Pupils will have fun exploring the natural colours, sounds, textures and scents which help us appreciate the natural world. This walk is easily accessible and perfect for groups visiting the Farmyard.

The 105 acre garden is full of surprise waterworks, inspiring sculptures and amazing plants. Pupils will explore the landscape with an intrepid garden guide to uncover some of its hidden stories and secrets.

Sculpture safari

The garden is the perfect place for children to explore great art in a relaxed, open-air setting. Your garden guide will lead pupils on a hunt for giant sculptures, old and new.
