Behind the Scenes - Day 2 (BTS02)
Wednesday 28 April SOLD OUT
Behind the scenes tour
See the house through the eyes of a member of the Chatsworth house team. This is an opportunity to explore parts of the house that are not publicly on show - working areas that are integral to the maintenance and preservation of the house. Where possible, the tour includes the joiner's shop (formerly the great Victorian kitchen) and the roof of the house (weather permitting).
The transformation of the South Sketch Gallery textiles
From a building site to a magnificent gallery, see how the South Sketch Gallery has been transformed as part of our Masterplan conservation work. Our Textile Department will talk you through this key project from lining the walls with silk to creating extraordinary curtains with swags, tails and braids.
Duchess Georgiana lecture
Born into the Spencer family, Georgiana married the 5th Duke of Devonshire. Famously charming, she bewitched and scandalised Georgian society, while at the same time being a compulsive gambler, influential leader of fashion and playing a significant role in the politics of her day. A new gallery, open from 2010, is devoted to her taste, style and influence and this lecture tells her fascinating story.
