'Pegasus' by Tim Harrisson

Tim Harrisson was born in 1952. He now lives and works in Wiltshire, where in 2001 he had a one man show in the New Art Centre at Roche Court. On exhibition were five new large Portland stone carvings. The artist is primarily a carver and works in both stone and wood. He uses the geology and ancient landscape of the surrounding country as a reference.

He has completed both public and private commissions, which include:

Portal for Millfield School n 1989 | Horizon for the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth 1995 | Granite Sculpture for Southampton Airport 1995 | Sea Edge for Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society 1995 | Sounding, in the crypt at Winchester Cathedral 1999 | Reflection for Epson College Surrey 2000 | Bearing is on exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Pegasus was commissioned by Lord and Lady Hartington as a sculpture for the park at Chatsworth and as a jump for the 2001 Horse Trials. Unfortunately the event was cancelled so 2002 will be the first time that Pegasus has been used as a jump. The sculpture represents a collaboration of skills between the artist, the course builder David Evans and various departments on Chatsworth Estate.

The artist says "It was a tremendous challenge to incorporate an idea about landscape, as well as making something which allowed a horse to jump it. The emphasis on the semi-circular structure of Pegasus frames the landscape and holds it, as well as balancing the rhythm of the piece. It was a tremendous opportunity to work with the craftsmen of Chatsworth in making such an ambitious sculpture and I would like to thank David Evans and John Oliver for their help."

The sculptures in the series are:
