Déjeuner sur l'herbe

Three metal figures having a picnic in a newly opened area called Quebec, with magnificent trees and a secret 300 year old water cascade. The sculptures are placed in a special clearing that looks out over the park. This is a new commission that joins other works at Chatsworth from the artist Allen Jones.

Allen Jones says, 'The chosen subject of the picnic echoes a famous painting by Edouard Manet, entitled "Déjeuner sur l'herbe". In both cases the public are being asked, in their mind's eye, to participate in the picnic. In the Manet painting a seated naked woman looks straight out of the picture, challenging the viewer to join them. At Chatsworth a visitor will come across my sculpture whilst walking through the woods. There is a vacant seat which suggests the possibility of joining the picnic, or else to face the other way and appreciate the beauty of the landscape.'
