Payroll Officer
(Part time – 3 full days or 5 part days each week)

An interesting opportunity has arisen within the HR and Payroll team at Chatsworth for an experienced payroll professional to work alongside our existing Payroll Officer, processing all pay for the Devonshire Group.

You will work closely with your colleague, taking ownership for processing the wages of around 1500 employees and pensioners on several different payrolls, processed on a rolling calendar over each month.

We aim to show continuous improvement and you will be supported in your ideas for improvements which impact on your department. 

You will be part of the Payroll and HR team, reporting to the HR & Systems Manager and you will be involved in some HR related tasks such as calculating and corresponding with individuals on occupational sick pay, maternity and other statutory leave. 

In time and with training, you will also assist the Head of Group HR by producing reports such as absence and pay reports.

The post is 3 days 21 hours per week, 9am – 5pm Mon, Tues, Friday or 5 part days.  However, you will be required to work flexibly within reason to ensure all payrolls are processed on time this may also require working a fourth day/additional hours once a month. 

Applicants should be payroll qualified or able to demonstrate good payroll knowledge and wide experience.  You should be numerate, with intermediate level excel and have good communication skills, able to liaise with employees at all levels in a friendly/knowledgeable manner.

Management Accountant
Qualified Accountant (or part qualified finalist)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified accountant (or part qualified finalist) within the Devonshire Group Finance Function based at the Chatsworth Estate Office, suitable for a candidate who is looking to develop and grow within their next role.

The Devonshire Group is the working name of the trusts, businesses and charities connected to the Duke of Devonshire, including Chatsworth and the Estates in Yorkshire and Sussex.

You will report to the Financial Controller and will work closely with the Commercial Finance Managers to provide accounting support to the Devonshire Group Businesses, initially focusing on the Trading and Derbyshire Estates divisions of the Group. However, you may also provide support for other areas of the group businesses and potential is available to widen or vary your role.  

You will also support Senior Management by providing financial and non-financial management information and working closely with them to develop budgets, forecasts and strategic plans. You will be responsible for preparing management accounts as well as completing VAT, Statutory and Government Statistical Returns. 

Working closely with the IT Team, you will develop and maintain of the Group’s Finance and Business Systems, providing system administration and support where appropriate.

You will be qualified (or part qualified finalist) with one of the recognised accounting bodies, with at least two years’ experience within a finance function. You will be a self-starter, with experience of working to deadlines and with the confidence to communicate with senior management.  You will be IT literate with strong Excel skills and previous experience of both accounting and MI systems.

Experience in Estates Management, Retail or Catering businesses and/or experience in the development and maintenance of finance and business systems would be an advantage.

Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop

Fish Counter Assistant
Part time: Monday, Tuesday and Sunday

An interesting position has become available for a friendly, customer orientated individual on the highly rated fish counter at Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop. 

No experience is necessary.  Applicants should have an interest in learning about and advising customers on the cooking and serving of fish and shellfish. You should also be flexible and willing to cover all areas including our delicatessen, tills, and butchery. 

You should be a team player, cheerful, helpful and positive, keen to meet our high standards of customer service.   The ability to work methodically, quickly and accurately, maintaining our exemplary Health & Safety and food hygiene practices, at even our busiest busy times is essential.  

The hours of work are 29 per week between the hours of 8.00am and 6.30pm usually on a Monday, Tuesday and Sunday.

Kitchen Porter
Full time  

An immediate vacancy has arisen for a kitchen porter to join the friendly catering team at Chatsworth. 

You will ensure that a clean, hygienic environment is maintained in the kitchen by cleaning all surfaces and maintaining order. You will also provide an adequate supply of clean pans, crockery and cutlery. However, flexibility is essential in this role and you should be willing to help out in other areas of the catering department including assisting the chefs with basic food preparation.

You should be able to work quickly and efficiently and be self-motivated, with the ability to work well under pressure.

Ideally, you will have a food hygiene certificate with previous experience of working in a busy restaurant kitchen, however this is not essential as full training can be provided.  

This is a full time position ending January 2016, working 40 hours per week from 9.30am to 6.00pm, five days out of seven on a rota basis which includes weekends.

Cleaning Operative
Part Time - 6 hours per week


An opportunity for a part time cleaning operative has arisen in the Farmyard and Adventure Playground. The post is seasonal working until early January 2016.  

You will ensure the Farmyard and Adventure Playground and facilities are kept to a high standard, raking and sweeping paths and yards, litter picking and emptying bins and clean public and staff toilets. You will also support the department, helping with other duties.

You should be able to work as part of a team and on your own initiative, making sure the Farmyard and Adventure Playground facilities reflect the Chatsworth quality. It is essential that you are reliable and ready to work flexibly for the smooth running of the business. Previous experience of cleaning is not required but would be beneficial.

Hours of work total 6 per week, working 3 hours per day on a Friday and Saturday. Flexibility in working hours is available; you can work from 7am-10am or 4.30pm-7.30pm on both Friday and Saturday. Please clearly state in your application which hours you would prefer.

Estate Farm Shop
Butchery Assistant

A permanent position is available working between 40 and 42.5 hours per week between the hours of 8.00am and 6.30pm, usually on Tuesday to Saturday.

Duties will include the making of our sausages and burgers, introducing seasonal lines, bringing innovation and experience to work as part of our very successful butchery team, developing new and exciting added value products as well as important cleaning duties.

Experience in handling meat products is desirable but not essential as training will be provided. Exemplary health, safety and hygiene practices alongside the ability to work under pressure without compromising quality and standards are required.

Estate Farm Shop 
Full time Assistant Chef/ Cook

In this varied role,  under the guidance of the Head Chef, you will use the first class produce available within the estate farm shop,  introduce new seasonal lines, bring together innovation and experience and, provide excellent meals of a consistently high standard. 

You will work predominately in the café kitchen but you will also gain experience in the delicatessen kitchen and in house bakery.

Applications will be accepted from chefs, cooks or good home cooks who are quick to learn and well-motivation. Experience working in a kitchen environment is desirable but is not essential as full training will be given. You must be committed to the highest health and safety and hygiene standards. 

This is permanent position working 40 hours per week, from 8.00am to 4.30pm on a Tuesday to Saturday. Flexibility will be required, particularly at busy periods.

Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop
Customer Service Assistants 

Several positions are available at the Estate Farm Shop as outlined below.

  1. Permanent 8 hours per week working on a Saturday. 
  2. Permanent 7 hours per week working on a Sunday.
  3. Christmas positions ranging from 8 hours to 40 hours per week. Beginning mid-October/November through to early January.
  4. Casual positions working on an ad hoc basis, as and when required.

The above roles are varied and interesting; providing you with the opportunity to work in all customer service areas of the Estate farm shop including: the delicatessen, tills, fish counter, butchery and restaurant.

No experience is necessary as full training will be provided.

Full time Education Assistant (One year fixed term),
The Devonshire Educational Trust

An exciting opportunity is available for an Education Assistant with a passion for outdoor education to join the education department at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth currently offers a range of educational activities which showcase the wealth of historic, environmental and artistic learning opportunities on the Estate. This new post will focus on the development and delivery of our expanding Outdoor Education programme but will also include working within the wider Education Team, taking part in a range of educational activities.

Our existing outdoor education programme uses the mature woodland and gardens at Chatsworth to run activities such as Woodland Discovery walks and Den Building sessions. We are keen to expand out outdoor offer and also market to and engage with a wider range of schools, youth and community groups.

It is essential that you are a confident deliverer, have experience of working with a range of ages; have good organisational skills and a proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook. Marketing and sales experience to schools and youth groups would be an advantage.

This is a one year fixed term post working a 37.5 hour week, however, flexibility in working hours is very important in this role as weekend working and start and finish times outside normal working hours not unusual.

Casual Customer Service Assistants
Weddings and Events

Chatsworth hosts a variety of functions, ranging from the annual Horse Trials and the Chatsworth Country Fair to high quality weddings and events. Interesting opportunities are now available for enthusiastic, customer focused individuals to assist the team responsible for delivering the food offer at these events.

Chatsworth is known for exceptional standards of customer service and you will help deliver this. Following training, you will be expected to act in a professional manner at all times during a busy service, working effectively as part of a friendly, efficient team.

Your duties will include: greeting, resolving enquiries and serving guests quickly and efficiently. You will help in the smooth operation of events; supporting the bar, front of house and kitchen areas.  You will also assist in setting up the function venue; moving chairs, tables and laying tables – which can be physically demanding. 

Previous functions experience is not essential as full training will be provided, however, the successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a passion for delivering a first class service.

Hours offered will be on a casual basis with the majority of the work at the weekend or evenings with the possibility of late finishes.
