Director of Collections & Exhibitions 
Chatsworth House Trust

Salary: Competitive, commensurate with the responsibilities of the role

Location: Chatsworth House, Derbyshire 

Chatsworth House Trust is seeking to appoint a Director of Collections and Exhibitions.  This is a newly expanded role which has responsibility for the Chatsworth Collections and Exhibitions programme primarily at Chatsworth House but also at other properties within the Devonshire Group, specifically, Lismore Castle and Bolton Abbey.

The Chatsworth Collections are one of the most important private collections in Britain containing fine and decorative art acquired over 450 years which reflect the tastes, passions and interests of succeeding generations. The present Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and their son and daughter-in-law, the Earl and Countess of Burlington, share their predecessors enthusiasm for contemporary art and this is reflected in new acquisitions and contemporary commissions which embody Chatsworth: personal, forward-looking and enthusiastically shared with visitors.

In this role, the Director of Collections and Exhibitions will be responsible for raising the profile of the Collections, Exhibitions and Loans programme, enhancing the reputation of Chatsworth and the broader Devonshire Group on the national and international cultural stage.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and accountable to the Devonshire Family and Trustees, the new Director will oversee the care of the Collections and will devise a compelling exhibitions programme, attracting a broad and diverse audience and building Chatsworth's credentials as a centre for cultural excellence.

Candidates for the role will be highly regarded as senior curators or artistic leaders with a good reputation for the quality and innovation of their exhibition programmes. They will have a broad knowledge and keen interest in the historic collections with an empathy with contemporary and conceptual art.  They will be well networked on the national and international arts scene and will have the strategic management, communications, collections knowledge and audience awareness to be effective in this broadly-based role. Joining Chatsworth at an exciting time of continuing change, they will have the inter-personal skills, credibility and innovativeness to make an important contribution to the evolution of Chatsworth.

Private Head Housekeeper
The Duke & Duchess of Devonshire’s Private Household 

A first rate experienced housekeeper is required to manage the private apartments at Chatsworth. This is a varied and interesting, hands-on role, with personal responsibility for a team of domestic assistants.

Together with your team, you will assist the Head Butler in providing a warm welcoming environment for the family and their guests, ensuring that the apartments are run to the highest standards.  

You should have experience in a similar environment; understanding the correct methods for: managing a wardrobe and caring for couture clothing, handling antiques and precious objects and general household management.

This is a very busy household, doing a great deal of entertaining on both a formal and informal basis and therefore there is a need to be calm, efficient and adaptable.  Complete confidentiality and attention to detail is a prerequisite, as is a sense of humour. 

You will be required to produce staffing and cleaning rotas and liaise with suppliers which will require IT skills. Previous supervisory experience is essential. Due to our location, a driving license is advantageous. 

The role is 5 days per week, including split shifts and weekends.   Flexibility in hours of work will be required.  An excellent package is available, including independent accommodation in a local cottage.

Live in Housekeeper - Bolton Abbey

The Duke & Duchess of Devonshire’s Private Residence in Yorkshire – The Hall at Bolton Abbey

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced housekeeper to live on site, alone, or with spouse according to circumstances, in a two bedroom apartment next to, but separate from, the main residence of The Hall which is set in the beautiful grounds of Bolton Priory.  

The Housekeeper will report to the Private Head Housekeeper based at Chatsworth and also the agent of the Bolton Abbey estate but be self-managed for the greater part of the year taking responsibility for all domestic arrangements within the Hall including:, cleaning, polishing, attending to laundry and arranging maintenance repairs. The housekeeper must be competent in handling antiques and precious objects. The Housekeeper will also employ temporary assistance for house parties.

Complete confidentiality and attention to detail is a prerequisite, as is a sense of humour. 

The role is 5 days per week, however, flexibility is essential with a requirement to be adaptable, reacting as appropriate to the situation,  including working longer hours and weekends when the owners are in residence.

Full-time Housekeeping Assistant
The Duke & Duchess of Devonshire’s Private Household

An interesting opportunity has arisen within the friendly housekeeping team caring for the private apartments at Chatsworth.

You will undertake general cleaning duties including; making and changing beds, vacuuming, polishing and assisting with washing and ironing.  Of upmost importance is the ability to deliver and maintain high standards, having an eye for detail at all times. 

This is a very busy household, doing a great deal of entertaining on both a formal and informal basis and you will be a part of the team providing a warm welcome for the Duke and Duchess’ guests. Complete confidentiality, discretion and a sense of humour is therefore essential. 

Previous housekeeping experience is not essential as full training will be provided. 

The role is 5 days per week, including some split shifts and some weekends.   Typical working hours are from 8.00am to 4.30pm with some split shifts from 8.00am until 1.00pm returning at 6pm until 9pm. Flexibility in hours of work  and a DBS check will be required.

Interim Buying Manager
Diverse Range of Quality Gifts


An opportunity has arisen for a professional buyer with flair and imagination to support the Buying Team at Chatsworth.  This is an interim position to cover a vital role within a team passionately committed to providing our customers with a high quality shopping experience.

To apply you should be able to demonstrate success in a commercial buying role, with experience in non-food and gift buying.  Candidates must have:

• Extensive knowledge of the UK retail market for gift buying.
• In depth understanding of product design, development and manufacturing processes.
• In depth understanding of product management and the drivers of customer satisfaction, spend, margins and profitability.
• Design flair, and knowledge of current design trends. 
• Knowledge of buying planning systems.
• Clear knowledge of sourcing best practice.  
• Graduate or equivalent qualifications.

Candidates must also be expert at supplier negotiation, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, be highly numerate, be able to work cross-functionally and be IT literate.  The role will report to the Head Buyer.  Accommodation can be provided locally if needed.

This interim position is available for immediate start due to existing personal circumstances within the buying team; expected to last a minimum of 6 months.

Junior Pastry Chef 
Catering department 

An opportunity has arisen for someone with kitchen experience to train as a pastry chef within the friendly bakery team at Chatsworth.   

You will gain valuable experience assisting the bakery supervisor in the production of a diverse range of constantly evolving, top quality bakery products of products, including: cakes and quiches, fine dining deserts, sorbets and ice creams; all made in house using fresh produce.   

You will also assist with stock and cost control, HACCP procedures, and motivating and developing staff. 

You should have previous experience of working in a food production role in a restaurant kitchen or similar environment and awareness of health and safety and food hygiene, together with a genuine desire to deliver products of the highest quality

Hours of work total 40 per week, working 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis.  Flexibility will be essential to meet the needs of the business, however, the majority of the work will be 9.00am-5.30pm.

Trainee Gardener 
3 month placement 

We have a new and exciting three month placement available within the Chatsworth garden.

As a trainee gardener you will have the unique opportunity to work within all areas of the gardens.    You will be guided to undertake a variety of tasks such as; planting and caring for trees, cutting flowers, cultivating vegetables, bedding plants, cutting hedges and weeding.  As part of the role you will be expected to use a wide range of garden tools and machinery.

Previous experience is not necessary as full training will be provided, however you should have a passion and interest in gardening; potentially aiming to pursue this as their future career.   You will be expected to complete a technical diary of your daily activities and undertake some agreed project work. In addition, you must be committed and hard-working, striving to contribute and maintain the  garden at Chatsworth to a high standard. 

This is a full-time, three month position expected to commence in May.   Hours of work total 40 per week, from 8.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Subsidised accommodation may be available on the Chatsworth Estate if required.

Part time Customer Service Assistant
Cavendish Rooms Restaurant

An interesting part-time opportunity is available within the Cavendish Rooms Restaurant, working from 12pm to 4pm on Monday and Wednesday. 

The Cavendish Restaurant provides a broad selection of high quality food for our visitor, ranging from tea and coffee to a three course lunch or a Laurent-Perrier Champagne afternoon tea.   You will work within a friendly team, greeting customers, providing full table service, working on the till and serving hot and cold drinks. 

Whilst previous experience in a restaurant environment would be beneficial, this is not essential as we will provide full training.   You must however be friendly, enjoy working as part of a team and keen to provide our customer with excellent levels of customer service.

Cavendish Club Catering Assistants

The Cavendish club is a friendly private club based at the Estate Office, Edensor serving drinks and food to employees, tenants and members of the Chatsworth sport clubs. 

You will help with the smooth operation of the club by working effectively within a small team; serving drinks and snacks from the bar, serving food at tables and supporting the kitchen during busy service. 

You must possess great people skills and be happy to maintain the excellent level of customer service enjoyed at the club. Experience of cash handling would be beneficial but is not essential. 

Applicants must be aged 18 or over as you will be required to serve alcohol.

Post 1 
Casual work, on an as and when required basis, is available when the club is open on;
• Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 3pm, and 
• Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm to 11pm.
Post 2
• 1 x permanent position on a Wednesday from 5pm to 11pm 
Post 3
• 2 x permanent positions on a Saturday from 5pm to 11pm 

All positions have the possibility of increased hours to cover holidays. Flexibility is essential, particularly at busy periods.

Full-time and Casual Kitchen Porters
Catering department 

Opportunities are available within the friendly catering team at Chatsworth as shown below:

1. Full-time 40 hours per week; working 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis from 9.30am to     6.00pm 
2. Casual work on an ad hoc, as and when required basis. 

You will ensure that a clean, hygienic environment is maintained in the kitchen by cleaning surfaces and maintaining order.    You will also provide an adequate supply of clean pans, crockery and cutlery.   Flexibility is essential in this role and you should be willing to help out in other areas of the catering department including assisting the chefs with basic food preparation.

You should be able to work quickly and efficiently and be self-motivated, with the ability to work well under pressure.

Ideally, you will have a food hygiene certificate with previous experience of working in a busy restaurant kitchen; however this is not essential as full training will be provided.
