Set of full-length curtains woven with red cabbage roses and green foliage on an ivory satin ground, edged in green velvet, with green silk tasselled tie-backs.
The fabric for these curtains was originally used to cover the walls in what was then called the Music Room.
The 6th Duke of Devonshire refers to his decision to convert them to curtains in his Handbook to Chatsworth and Hardwick, printed in 1844: "after covering the walls with cut velvet that I imagined was perfection, a year's experience obliged me to strip to off and to convert it into curtains both for this room and for the library where it succeeds most entirely".
