Poisonous chemical weapons had been used against soldiers fighting in the First World War, and it was feared that these weapons would be used again, and against civilians in Britain.

During the Second World War, Chatsworth was home for six years to Penrhos College, a girls' school from Colwyn Bay in Wales.
