Before stainless steel became widely used for making cutlery, knives could rust very quickly. It was a difficult and ongoing task for servants in large houses to keep their cutlery clean, and knife-cleaning machines were among the earliest labour-saving devices to be used in large houses.

Knives were placed in the slots at the top of the round wooden box; when the handle was turned, an array of roller sharpeners, bristles and buffers inside would clean and polish the blades at the same time.
