This Axminster carpet was specially woven for the Library at Chatsworth when the room was altered by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. The large medallions in the carpet reflect the roundel designs in the ceiling above, which survive from when the room was originally the 1st Duke of Devonshire's Long Gallery.

Woven in three sections, each piece has a central floral medallion in colours on a bright blue ground, and is surrounded by broad foliage scrolls and fleurs-de-lys in pink, orange and blue on a buff ground.
