Launched in London in 2005, the designer ready-to-wear label ERDEM is associated with versatile yet powerful femininity. Now a firm favourite of London Fashion Week, Erdem Moralioglu trained at the Royal College of Art, before founding the label and has since accumulated many awards from the British Fashion Council, including the British Fashion Designer of the Year Award.
ERDEM’s designs are known for their couture-like level of craftsmanship and their vibrant and experimental textiles, commanding a strong celebrity and other dedicated following. Recent inspirations range from an imagined meeting of his great-grandmothers (from Ashton-under-Lyne and from eastern Turkey) to the journey of a time-travelling Princess Mary, bride of William of Orange.
In conversation with Alice Rawsthorn, design critic and author of Hello World: Where Design Meets Life, Erdem talks about his work as one of the fashion industry’s most highly regarded figures, what inspires his collections and the creative process behind his designs.
