After many years in the Duke and Duchess's collection, the remarkable Cornwall Slate Line, by renowned sculptor Richard Long, has been placed in the garden for all to see. It stretches along a grass shelf overlooking the parallel Canal Pond. I love this shot of it, taken by the talented Matthew Bullen, a member of the garden team, late in the afternoon when the setting sun gives hints of gold and pink to the grey slate. In the rain, the slate darkens and shines, changing just as the ground it comes from changes with the seasons and the weather. Long is a great British sculptor, and his work is shown all over the world; I am so pleased to see this really imposing and dramatic work on display here, adding to the rich experience visitors can now have of contemporary British sculpture in the garden.
