A recent search in the archive has brought to light an alternative history to the latest and most interesting of our holiday cottages. The popular opinion when Russian Cottage was being restored was that the cottage was sent as a flat-pack type structure to the 6th Duke from the Tsar of Russia to make amends for a cancelled visit.

Recent archival evidence suggests that this is not the case, but that the Tsar’s brother sent an intricate model of a Russian farmhouse to the 6th Duke as a reminder and keepsake of their friendship, and from that came the inspiration for the 6th Duke to build Russian Cottage. The model is not currently on display at Chatsworth, but is still part of the Devonshire collection today.
