Being part of the Education Team here at Chatsworth brings lots of interesting projects and experiences but one of my favourite days of the year has to be when we run our ARTiculation Discovery Days.
These are days when we invite students aged 14 - 16 along from local secondary schools to take part in a special day that mixes art history research, making new friends, and public speaking. We were inspired to start doing this a few years ago by our friends at Roche Court Educational Trust
and their national Articulation prize for 6 form students. We decided to do something similar at Chatsworth to give students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with art history, research techniques and also to develop the skills required in composing and delivering a presentation - but we incorporate the less scary version where the presentations at the end of the day are given as group presentations.
In mid October we welcomed 30 students from five local schools to attend. The day offered students a number of fantastic opportunities, including the chance to interview the Duke of Devonshire and also getting support and feedback during a rehearsal with the Duchess of Devonshire and DET trustee Dianne Jeffrey.
The group presentations at the end of the day were made back in the theatre after a full house tour in front of a full audience. The groups' presentations were wonderful, giving lots of information and putting their own thoughts and feelings forward about the pieces they were studying. It is great to see the students work together so well and you can see them grow in confidence during the day. The presentations always seem to provide such an appropriate high for the end of our day and the groups get feedback from the Duke of Devonshire and Abigail Harrison Moore (Head of School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural studies at University of Leeds).
ARTiculation Discovery Days are now in their third year here at Chatsworth and it is the enthusiasm and input of the young people that take part that make them such a success. Many thanks to all the students from Fir Vale School, Shirebrook Academy, Eckington School. Derby High School and Sheffield High School for their hard work and inspiring input.
