The most stressful day of the year – Christmas tree arrival!
Fortunately, the weather yesterday was fantastic. This meant that when the 78 Christmas trees arrived at lunch time we were able to get them unloaded and most of the house trees indoors before the rain arrived today. Members of various teams help with the unloading process. Mark Rhodes and his joiners were busily involved, plus the housemen (and women), together with gardeners, electricians, engineers, house guides and members of the ticket team.
Meanwhile, inside the house members of the housekeeping team are still busy transforming the Christmas route into the story of 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' – our Christmas theme for 2013. We are currently putting up garlands in the Painted Hall which will soon be transformed to the Ice Palace of the White Witch. The Wardrobe made by the joiners is being filled with fur coats by members of the textiles team who are also decorating the Great Dining Room table, and contractors are engaged in erecting the marquee for the north entrance hall in order to provide shelter for queuing visitors.
Tomorrow the tree decorating will start in earnest.
