The scaffold is coming down! Cleaning and restoration work on the north front has finished, and as I write, the team is dismantling the main part of the scaffold. One tower, with the builders' lift and stairs, will remain, in preparation for the next phase of cleaning work, but in the meantime, everyone can begin to see the transformation in the house's colour. During early research, evidence was found of gold leaf on the stone flames and balls that sit on top of most of the stone urns on the roof, proof that the 1st Duke gilded them, as well as his window frames, his family motto, and so much else that reflected his wealth and status. As the urns are cleaned over the next 18 months, this gold is being replaced. As the present Duke says, Donald Trump, eat your heart out!
