Collections Manager

The Devonshire Collections

Following the recruitment of our new Director of Collections, we now enter the final stage of our plans to strengthen our existing professional collections team, in order to deliver our exciting vision for Collections and exhibitions at Chatsworth and Lismore Castle.

In this new role you will lead the Collections team of 12 highly regarded specialists, taking responsibility for the management, care, access, research and development of the internationally significant collection of fine and decorative arts, books, and archives based at Chatsworth, Bolton Abbey and Lismore Castle.

Reporting to the Director of Collections, you will also work closely with the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire, their Family and the Trustees to maximize the potential of the collection for public benefit; raising the profile of this valuable collection whilst ensuring its care. You will be supported in achieving this goal by colleagues including: the Head of Exhibitions, Head of Development and Devonshire Education Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced collections manager to uncover the untold history within these vast collections, helping bring rare and beautiful items to life in ways that will captivate today’s audience of adults children and scholars alike.

To achieve our vision you will be degree educated in a relevant field, already be in a senior curatorial role within a historic house or museum, managing large projects and/or leading curators and archivists in the care of a collection. You will have a track record of partnership working, overseeing collections projects and devising successful development strategies. Experience in managing a database and controlling budgets is essential in this role.

Interpretation Officer

(Project led)

We are looking for a creative and inspirational Interpretation Project Officer who will help to bring new stories to life at Chatsworth.

You will play an important role working in partnership with colleagues in the house and garden, from teams including: collections & exhibitions; education; guiding and marketing. Working with the Visitor Services Manager you will be responsible for leading a number of new and varied projects to engage our visitors and increase their connection with Chatsworth.

This is an opportunity to be innovative and to make a difference across a number of key projects, from new multimedia guides and guide books, to the creative use of new technology, film and audio.

You will be an experienced project manager and communicator, who will be able to turn content into inspiring and moving stories for our wide range of visitors.

You must have strong written and verbal communication skills, graphic design appreciation and have strong IT skills across all Microsoft Office applications and ideally proficient in graphic design packages.

Being organised and methodical in your approach to work, you must also be able to prioritise and manage your own workload whilst working to deadlines.

This is a 12 month, fixed-term contract working 39 hours per week.

Horticultural Traineeship

Chatsworth have partnered with DART Training to offer a new and exciting traineeship program, offering the unique opportunity to support and maintain the beautiful 105 acre historic gardens on the Chatsworth Estate.

Chatsworth, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, has been passed down through sixteen generations of the Cavendish family. Its large grounds have evolved over 450 years, with each generation adding their own style and new features. 

Working outside, as part of a small team, you will assist across the Estate Gardens, developing a wide range of work based skills including team work, general employability, functional skills and basic horticultural knowledge, all whilst working practically, and contributing to a friendly, passionate and hardworking team environment.

To be eligible for this 24 week Traineeship programme, you must be 16– 24 years old, not in employment, education or training, and be interested in horticulture, gardens, and developing and maintaining landscapes.

Two days per week - £7 per day bursary

Full & Part Time Customer Service Assistants

Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop & Café

We have a number of vacancies available at the Estate Farm Shop and Café for enthusiastic, hard-working people to join us over the busy Christmas and New Year period.

You will have the opportunity of working in all customer service areas of the farm shop including the delicatessen, tills, fish counter, butchery and café – helping showcase a variety of fantastic local products, catering for both our regular visitors and tourists passing through.

Previous experience is not essential as we will provide full training; it is more important to us that you are able to demonstrate a passion for customer service, are friendly, work well in a team and are keen to provide a level of service that exceeds expectations, on every occasion.

Fixed term positions, with a variety of hours available, from 8 hours to 40 hours per week. Start dates will be in Oct/Nov, with guaranteed hours through to January.

Full Time Housekeeping Assistant

The Duke & Duchess of Devonshire’s Private Household

An interesting opportunity has arisen within the friendly housekeeping team caring for the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire’s private apartments at Chatsworth.

You will care for the apartments, maintaining very high standards with your duties including; handling antiques and precious objects, making and changing beds, vacuuming, polishing and assisting with washing and ironing - an eye for detail is essential.

This is a busy household, doing a great deal of both formal and informal entertaining and you will be a part of the team providing a warm welcome for guests; complete confidentiality, discretion and a sense of humour is essential.

Previous housekeeping experience is not essential as full training will be provided.

The role is 5 days per week, including some split shifts and weekends. Typical working hours are from 8.00am to 4.30pm when working days and from 8.00am until 1.00pm returning at 6pm until 9pm when working split shifts. Flexibility in hours of work and a DBS check will be required. A good rate of pay and benefits package is offered.

Personal Carer and Household Assistant

A rare opportunity has arisen for a cheerful and kind personal carer and household assistant to provide high quality care to an independent elderly lady on the Chatsworth Estate.  This is a permanent position, to start as soon as possible.

You will work a minimum of 30 hours per week on a rota basis within a team supplying seven-day care. The rota will include one overnight per week, plus a combination of dayshifts, evenings and/or weekends, and it will include the Christmas and New Year holiday periods.  As such, flexibility is essential. 

You will assist with personal care during different times of the day and evening and with food preparation at meal times. The role will also involve light domestic duties in the household.  A valid UK driving licence is required.

This is a rewarding and varied role, which is ideal for a caring, patient, kind and active individual with a good sense of humour.

Previous experience and training of providing personal care is essential. Given the nature of the role, sensitivity and confidentiality is an absolute priority. This position is open to female applicants only.  An excellent rate of pay is offered.

A permanent opportunity has arisen, working full-time throughout the season within our friendly catering team at Chatsworth.

This role provides the opportunity for you to gain experience in both the production of homemade food for our day visitors, and creative dishes for our fine dining customers within the rapidly expanding wedding and events business.

The role also offers the opportunity for significant personal development; assisting in and contributing to the delivery of food of the highest standard in all sections of the business.

Exemplary health, safety and hygiene practices are essential.

This is a seasonal permanent position working 40 hours per week, five days out of seven on a rota basis from late March to early January each year. Flexibility will be essential to meet the needs of the business; however, the majority of the work will be 9.00am-6:00pm.
