Head of Retail

We are working in conjunction with Berwick & Partners to recruit for a new Head of Retail to be based here at Chatsworth.

Chatsworth and the Devonshire Group is innovative and fast growing, presenting leading edge exhibitions and events with partners such as Gucci and Sotheby’s.  We now seek a strategic and dynamic Head of Retail to maximise the potential of the current offering and increase revenues alongside their appetite for growth.  This will be led by the successful candidate and will include new product lines, e-commerce, licensing agreements, and pop-ups, and may also include increasing the number of shops.

The role has full accountability for the P&L of the three Chatsworth retail gift shops and the Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop via seven direct reports, including the buying team.  This is a rare opportunity for a creative retailer to join a very special organisation at an exciting time in its evolution. The Role

  • Devise a strategy and business plan to grow Chatsworth’s retail revenue & profitability line with the group’s vision and values, to include investment proposals.
  • Engage with customers and internal stakeholders, led by the Devonshire family, to ensure the retail offer is fresh and commercially relevant. This will include improving operating procedures, all aspects of product range expansion and retail environment development, to include “make versus buy” assessments.
  • Work with the Chief Operating Officer and Trading Finance Manager to produce budgets in line with the defined business plan targets.
  • Day-to-day management and development of the buying team, as well as the retail operations and warehousing teams.

The Candidate

  • Proven track record of growing a diverse retail business, through improving productivity, product availability and customer service in a food and/or gift retailer.
  • Understanding of omni-channel retailing.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Able to deliver change in an environment with strong values.

Collections Manager, The Devonshire Collections

We are working in conjunction with Liz Amos Associates to recruit a Collections Manager to be based here at Chatsworth.

Following the recruitment of the new Director of Collections, Chatsworth House Trust now enters the final stage of plans to strengthen the existing professional collections team, in order to deliver their exciting vision for Collections and exhibitions at Chatsworth and Lismore Castle.

In this new role you will lead the Collections team of 12 highly regarded specialists, taking responsibility for the management, care, access, research and development of the internationally significant collection of fine and decorative arts, books, and archives based at Chatsworth, Bolton Abbey and Lismore Castle.

Reporting to the Director of Collections, you will also work closely with the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire, their Family and the Trustees to maximize the potential of the collection for public benefit; raising the profile of this valuable collection whilst ensuring its care. You will be supported in achieving this goal by colleagues including: the Head of Exhibitions, Head of Development and Devonshire Education Trust.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced collections manager to uncover the untold history within these vast collections, helping bring rare and beautiful items to life in ways that will captivate today’s audience of adults children and scholars alike.

To achieve Chatsworth House Trusts’ vision, you will be degree educated in a relevant field, already be in a senior curatorial role within a historic house or museum, managing large projects and/or leading curators and archivists in the care of a collection. You will have a track record of partnership working, overseeing collections projects and devising successful development strategies. Experience in managing a database and controlling budgets is essential in this role.

Curator – Exhibitions and Engagement

We are working in conjunction with Liz Amos Associates to recruit a Curator of Exhibitions and Engagement to be based here at Chatsworth.

The role of Curator, Exhibitions and Engagement offers a rare opportunity to join the collections team, in this important senior role and at a time of increasing investment in exhibitions and interpretation at Chatsworth.

You will be responsible for delivering exhibitions and displays across the House and Garden, and within the context of the extensive collections at Chatsworth. Ensuring public impact, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities are maximised and ensuring efficient delivery through management of project teams. Whilst being able to work across all aspects of the Collection, you will have a particular interest in contemporary art, actively promoting its presence at Chatsworth. You will also take a lead on interpretation, working closely with other colleagues and departments, devising a creative and innovative approach.

You will be an experienced, graduate calibre curator from a museum or historic house environment, with a strong track record of delivering successful, ambitious exhibitions. Able to demonstrate strong leadership qualities, you will be a capable project and people manager with experience of managing budgets, undertaking research, working with artists and developing partnerships.

A creative, enthusiastic and methodical individual, with the ability to lead from the front, you will have a passion for audience engagement, and be driven by the delivery of fresh and exciting installations.

Event Sales Manager

Chatsworth is a beautiful location for all types of events; from dinner parties, to wedding breakfasts and corporate events. In this role you will have the opportunity of leading on the delivery of these events on the day, to ensure our guests have a truly memorable experience.

You will manage a small wedding & events team, creating a long and short term sales strategy. Leading on the sales of weddings and commercial events; liaising at a senior level with clients, ensuring that the proposition is attractive, competitive and well-communicated.

You will be an ambassador for Chatsworth, regularly meeting with clients and couples for site visit, often out of hours, on evenings and weekends, and ensure the successful delivery of both small, intimate functions as well as complex, high profile, and large scale events.

This is a multifaceted role in which you will negotiate contracts, manage marketing, lead on long term sales forecasting and work closely with third-party suppliers.

You should be an enthusiastic, proactive and self-motivated people manager, with experience in sales and marketing, and wedding and/or commercial event organization with creative and commercial capability.

This is a full-time, permanent role working 40 hours per week, generally Monday – Friday, but covering weekends when necessary. You must be flexible to suit both the needs of the business and any client appointments that may arise.

Security Officer

An interesting and varied Security Officer post has arisen at Chatsworth which requires both efficiency in security operation and excellent customer care skills.

You will often be at the forefront when visitors arrive and it is therefore essential that you enjoy meeting people and are able to provide a warm and efficient welcome to visitors, VIP’s, staff and the emergency services whilst maintaining awareness.

Previous experience of similar work is desirable including: operating a computer, maintaining vigilant observations; monitoring and responding quickly and appropriately to intruder alarms, fire alarms, local monitoring systems and CCTV; carrying out security patrols, operating control room equipment and maintaining routine security records.

Flexibility is a key element of this role and all applicants must be able to work in a calm and competent manner both alone and as part of a team.

The post operates on a 12 hour shift pattern, covering 7 days a week - full details will be given during interview. Applicants must be prepared to undergo a DBS check and hold a driving licence.

A full-time, permanent opportunity has arisen within our friendly catering team at Chatsworth, based in the Stables kitchen and providing varied dishes to meet the needs of our different restaurants and events; from rustic home-made dishes to fine dining - all made with seasonal fresh ingredients.

You will work with the senior chefs on the creation of new dishes and menus, while assisting with the development and training of junior members of the kitchen staff.

You should be able to demonstrate a genuine desire to deliver food of the highest quality in all sections of the business and be an experienced, time spent section leader with an excellent track record in health & safety and hygiene practices.

Casual Kitchen Porters

Catering department

Casual opportunities are available within the friendly catering team at Chatsworth; working on an ad-hoc, as and when required basis.

You will ensure that a clean, hygienic environment is maintained in the kitchen by cleaning surfaces and maintaining order. You will also provide an adequate supply of clean pans, crockery and cutlery. Flexibility is essential in this role and you should be willing to help out in other areas of the catering department including assisting the chefs with basic food preparation.

You should be able to work quickly and efficiently and be self-motivated, with the ability to work well under pressure.

Ideally, you will have a food hygiene certificate with previous experience of working in a busy restaurant kitchen; however this is not essential as full training will be provided.

Hours of work are offered on a casual basis; however, please note that shifts are generally between the hours of 9.00am and 6.00pm on weekdays and weekends, with the occasional need for additional hours in busy periods.

The successful applicant will play an active role in the day to day operation of the busy IT helpdesk. You’ll need to be quick to learn, whilst delivering a business critical first-line IT support function.

You must be committed to offering excellent customer service to the Group; and be comfortable liaising with IT suppliers, assisting with the development of IT processes and working as a team player within IT.

The successful applicant for this exciting role will be able to demonstrate:
