Chatsworth has always prided itself on the welcome we offer all visitors. We are able to offer full access to the main visitor route in the house for visitors using wheelchairs, via a lift and access arrangements. Please do book your visit in advance if you can, as the number of wheelchairs in use on the top floor of this historic building has to be monitored for your safety and enjoyment. There is good access to the garden, farmyard, shops and restaurants; electric scooters can be borrowed for outside and there are free buggies transporting visitors around the car park and stables area.

Car parking

A free car park for Blue Badge holders is available at the front of the car park; visitors with restricted mobility may be dropped off and collected from the main entrance.

Electric scooter and manual wheelchairs

We have three scooters which can be borrowed to use in the garden, and eight wheelchairs for use both in the garden and house. Please book in advance to ensure availability. They can be collected from the main gate. For safety reasons, at the discretion of the member of staff on duty, we reserve the right not to issue scooters in bad weather.

There are adapted lavatories near the house entrance, in the restaurant and at the farmyard, but none in the garden.

There is a lift in the house, allowing access to the entire visitor route for visitors with restricted mobility.

Electric scooters cannot be used inside the house, however other smaller mobility aids other than electric scooters may be used.

Shops and restaurants

The shops, Carriage House restaurant and the bar within the Cavendish Rooms are all fully accessible, although space is limited inside the graden shop. A six seater golf buggy is available to take visitors from the lodge up Stables Hill to the Carriage House restaurant and shop; please ask at the lodge.

Farm shop and restaurant

The farm shop and its restaurant are 1.5 miles from the house; both areas are accessible for visitors in manual wheelchairs.

Farmyard and adventure playground

The entrance is at the top of the main car park. A lift and a ramp give access to all levels and facilities, including animal housing, picnic room, cafe, shop and playground. Please be aware that the playground is a woodland site with uneven terrain and a soft bark surface. The paddocks and picnic area are accessible via a gently sloping footpath.

Trailer rides

The 28 seater trailer is fully wheelchair accessible; it offers rides to the woods and lakes behind the house. There is a small additional charge, and if wheelchair access is required, it is essential to pre-book to ensure availability, on 01246 583139. Otherwise, rides are on a 'first come first served' basis. Private tours can be pre-booked for groups of 15 or more.

Wheelchair access from Baslow into the park

The Kissing Gate was installed in 1999, allowing access to the park from Baslow. It allows wheelchair access to the park without leaving a gap through which grazing stock might escape.

Further maps of the garden are included in the guide book and a larger print guidebook is available in English. Please ask a member of staff at the house entrance if you would like to borrow a copy.

Visitors with visual impairments

Visitors with visual impairments are eligible for a complimentary audio tour of the house when buying admission tickets. The sensory garden located near the display house has been developed to stimulate all the senses, including sound, touch and smell.

Visitors with hearing impairments

A British Sign Language interpreter is available by prior arrangement only. To book please call 01246 565420. The sensory garden located near the display house has been developed to stimulate all the senses, including sight, touch and smell.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome in the house, garden and park. Puppies in assistance dog training are welcome in the house, garden and park as long as they are house trained.
