Botanical embroidery with Lucy Freeman
Saturday 12 August
Sunday 13 August
10am to 2pm
£60 per person
Including garden entry
Learn to create beautiful botanical embroidery inspired by the Chatsworth Garden.
Artist Lucy Freeman's contemporary embroidery style is easy to learn, quick and expressive. It's simpler than the traditional methods and produces expressive and painterly results, perfect for flowers and plants.
We will start from the absolute basics of threading a needle so all abilities are welcome. During the workshop we will sew a sampler hoop of Lucy’s four basic stitches, as well as creating your own botanical design, inspired by the Chatsworth Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the garden, taking photographs and drawing to inspire your finished piece.
Lucy’s embroidery artwork will be on display throughout the workshop for inspiration, as well as a variety of drawings, templates and botanical illustrations.
Your ticket includes all the materials: fabric, threads, templates, an embroidery hoop and needle, as well as instructional sheets and access to video tutorials so you can continue to learn more after the workshop. Plus, you can take everything home with you to continue sewing at home. Entry to the Chatsworth Garden and car parking are also included.
The botanical embroidery workshop will take place in our indoor art space, the Old Potting Shed, which can be found in the Chatsworth Garden. Please meet at the top garden gates (near the Stables) at 9.50am.

About the artist
Lucy Freeman is a textile artist and designer. Merging the traditional craft of embroidery with contemporary design, her work is full of vibrant colours, painterly stitching and delicate botanical and floral imagery. Lucy creates entirely hand-crafted wall hangings and framed embroideries, often working on a large scale rarely seen in embroidery. Her innovative methods for framing and presenting embroidery have elevated her work to national recognition in galleries and the press.
She is an experienced tutor, having taught workshops across the UK for the last six years, as well as producing a successful range of embroidery kits, which have been sold in John Lewis and Liberty. Lucy is also a regular contributor to craft magazines including Mollie Makes and Love Embroidery, where her embroidery projects have featured as the cover star several times.
