In this pre-recorded talk, led by Katherine Hardwick-Kulpa, Curator of the Devonshire Collections at Chatsworth House Trust, we explore the inspiration and artisans behind the last 17th-century redesign of Chatsworth House by William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire (1640 - 1707).
About the talk
Between 1687 and 1707, the 1st Duke of Devonshire set about transforming his ancestral seat into one of the finest Baroque palaces of the age. To do this, he employed some of the most important and famous craftsmen working in England at the time to create the opulent interiors you can still see at Chatsworth today.
In this talk, we delve into how the Duke built his palace and how it engaged with a wider network of taste centred on the court of William and Mary, while remaining the unique creation of its individual surroundings.
