As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to close our Study Room to external researchers for the rest of 2020. The Study Room is a small shared space, which means that we are currently unable to accommodate external visitors whilst also ensuring that all COVID-safe working measures are maintained. We will review the situation in January 2021 and an updated statement will be released at that point.

Accessing works of art

If you wish to visit to access works of art that are not normally on display, this is strictly by advance appointment only. Please note the following:

  • Appointments can be made for Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • The Study Room is open from 10am to 4.30pm.
  • The Study Room is closed on Tuesdays and bank holidays.
  • Space in the Study Room is limited, so two weeks' notice is usually required.

Requests to view works of art should be sent by email or in writing to the Collections Manager, details below.

Application for access

In order to access the collections, please complete the application form below, by which you also confirm that you have read and agree to meet our conditions of access and Study Room regulations. On your first visit, you must provide photographic identification, such as a driving licence or passport, so that your application can be validated.

Please return your completed forms by email or post to the Collections Manager, details below.

Fees for access

Please note that the Collections department normally charges a fee of £25 for each visit per day, or part-day, payable by cash or by cheque drawn on an English bank. It is payable at the end of a visit and a receipt is issued. The department reserves the right to vary the fee, depending on the staff time involved.
