Using a mixture of plain water, scrubbing brushes, toothbrushes and elbow grease the aim is to remove algae and lichen growth that will eventually damage the surface stone and also makes it look green and dirty. The sculptures to be cleaned range from animals to mythological figures to urns and each takes around one to three hours to clean, depending on its size.

They are made from marble, Portland stone or magnesium limestone and each requires a slightly different cleaning technique. Portland stone is quite hard, whereas magnesium limestone is very soft and care needs to be taken not to damage the surface.
