Each clock has to be wound weekly and checked to ensure that they are telling the correct time. The collection ranges from small carriage clocks to elaborate gilt mantle clocks, and even includes the large Stables clock which is wound every other day and keeps Chatsworth ticking over.

The weekly wind takes one person, on average, two hours to complete and is done before house opening at 11am.

Every spring and autumn the clocks must be adjusted as Daylight Saving Time begins/comes to an end. The adjustment takes place on the Sunday morning before opening, with each clock being stopped for an hour and then started again so they tell the correct time.
