This large oval miniature depicts William, 4th Earl and 1st Duke of Devonshire. He wears a brown wig, lace cravat or jabot and polished armour indicating his status as a martial commander.

Peter Crosse was born in London, his father was a Freeman of the Draper’s Company. It is not known how Crosse came to train and work as a miniaturist. He was successful and painted members of the courts of King William and Queen Mary, and Queen Anne.

Working at the sign of "the Blue Anchor" on Henrietta Street in Covent Garden. On his death Crosses’ valuable collections of miniatures were offered for sale.
