Join our archives and library team for an extra special evening in the Chatsworth archives.

Examine famous scientist Henry Cavendish's desk and instruments and dive into his unique travel journals. Experience the way that Henry saw the world around him and peruse the detailed notes of his experiments and observations, some of which took place over decades.

Henry Cavendish (1732-1810) F.R.S., the grandson of the Second Duke of Devonshire, has been called “the Man who Weighed the World” and has drawn comparisons with Isaac Newton for the extraordinary nature of his work in electricity, magnetism, heat, chemistry, astronomy and mathematics. He was meticulous with his experiments and focussed on detail, accuracy and precision. On a personal level, he had a reputation for being shy and uncomfortable in society, leading to modern posthumous diagnosis of autism.

Project Archivist Erinna Cave will talk you through some of the highlights of our collection of Henry’s papers, along with his instruments, and share her work on an ongoing project to catalogue the papers, funded by the American Institute of Physics, the Duke of Devonshire’s Charitable Trust and the Chatsworth House Trust.

This event is exclusive to Patrons of Chatsworth and is by invitation only. Please contact development@chatsworth.org if you are a Patron and have not received your invitation.
