It has taken me a long time to finally arrive at a publication date for my memoirs, and now that it’s only one day away on 1 November, I can hardly believe it!
I’ve always kept a fairly basic diary, with fuller entries for special events, but when people at the outside talks I give suggested that I write my experiences down, I decided to give it a try. That was about ten years ago. When I found myself housebound following knee surgery last winter, I seized the opportunity to finish the project.
Undecided whether to actually publish the memoirs or keep them for posterity, I asked the Duke and Duchess for their opinion. They have been very supportive, and encouraged me to publish with the Duke even providing me with a foreword.
My Chatsworth deputy, Janet Bitton, has provided me with 20 wonderful line drawings to accompany the chapters, and I’ve also managed to squeeze in 63 photographs, providing happy memories of some of the wonderful parties and other events enjoyed at Chatsworth over my 40 years at work here.
