This Christmas, step inside Chatsworth House and be magically transported to the frozen realms of the far north.
Deep Midwinter: A Nordic Christmas at Chatsworth brings to life the Christmas folklore and traditions of the Arctic and Nordic regions through a series of themed roomscapes. Sculpted 'ice' walls, tranquil pine forests, lanterns, traditional Nordic Christmas decorations and foliage foraged from woodlands and hedgerows across the estate evoke the sights, sounds and scents of the natural world at wintertime.
Travel through scenes inspired by famous Nordic fairy tales; the White Bear, the Little Fir Tree, the Snowdrop and the Teapot. Collect postcards on your journey, each featuring popular tales from Nordic children’s authors, including Hans Christian-Andersen, alongside photographs of items from the Devonshire Collections.
The Norse god Loki, a powerful sorcerer and mischief-maker, will be making a special appearance providing stories, music and magic tricks and encouraging younger visitors to ‘shapeshift’ into favourite woodland animals.
Make a magical Chatsworth Christmas wish to hang on our special Wish Trees and enjoy the chance to snap a Christmas themed photo with family and friends in front of our giant snowball or epic 24-foot Christmas trees.
Taking a starring role in the celebrations are pieces from the Collections that reflect the Devonshire family's long history of celebrating Nordic culture and its connection to wilderness and nature. Many of the items are not often on display, including winter clothing worn by the 11th Duke of Devonshire on his expeditions into the wild, Nordic gems and crystals and a delicate and extremely rare strand of raw silver collected by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and originating from Ilsoe mine in Konsberg, Norway.
Our Nordic theme continues into the garden with an enchanting Christmas light trail. Experience our ‘northern lights’ over the Canal Pond, let colour guide you along Broad Walk into a glade of glowing lights and, for the first time, see the Maze illuminated and filled with festive music.
This year’s Chatsworth at Christmas is rooted in the natural world and sustainability, with an emphasis on using natural materials and handmade objects to decorate the house. If you're a frequent visitor at Christmas time, you may spot some of your favourite baubles as the team reuse as many pieces as possible each year.
